This project has been very special to us at Boulder Landscape and Design. We genuinely enjoyed working with this homeowner from start to finish to create such a charming and vibrant space.

About the Project

The homeowner reached out to Boulder Landscape and Design with the goal to transform their backyard into a space that was more functional for their needs, used less water, while also felt like an extension of their home.

They wanted a space that was inviting and plants that provided significant amounts of texture, dimension, and bursts of seasonal color while providing year-round interest, plants that were low-water and would allow pollinators to thrive and felt like a secret garden at their charming Louisville bungalow home.

We knew that to accomplish the homeowners’ goals in their compact backyard, our design plan would need to be concise and begin with removing all the sod area to maximize planting and reduce water usage.

We recommended a completely xeriscaped yard with three permaculture raised garden boxes, ample xeriscape plantings that delivered the texture and dimension desired, and included a mixed use of evergreens, ornamental grasses, and boulders to create year-round interest. Plants used to create the pollinator garden with bright colors included Black-Eyed Susan, Beebalm, Lavender, Echinacea, Nepeta, and Agastache among others. In addition to all the planting, we suggested adding a fire pit and winding flagstone path to really create the cozy feeling the customer wanted.

The homeowner was thrilled with the collaborative approach Catherine took with the design plans and proceeded forward with Boulder Landscape and Design building the space.
